Liberty University SUES New York Times Over Yet Another Misleading Story

( Liberty University has promised to make an example of the far-left newspaper The New York Times this week, announcing a $10 million defamation suit against the newspaper. It comes after the Times published an article that implied how the Christian university was responsible for its students contracting the Chinese coronavirus.

Liberty alleges in the suit, which is 94 pages long, that the Times’ story “Liberty University Brings Back Its Students, and Coronavirus Fears, Too” was defamatory. The school alleged that the piece, written by Elizabeth Williamson, “intentionally misrepresented that ‘Liberty’ had reopened its campus after spring break and suffered a COVID-19 outbreak as a result.”

The lawsuit also focused on Julia Rendleman, a photographer who took photographs for the piece.

In the story, Williamson suggests that “nearly a dozen” students from Liberty University had become sick with symptoms suggesting they had contracted COVID-19 after being allowed to return to campus as normal following the spring break. The primary source used for the piece was Dr. Thomas J. Eppes, who told the Times that he ran the university’s student health service.

The suit from Liberty University claims that Eppes did not run the school’s health service, and that the nearly-dozen students who were sick did not exhibit COVID-19 symptoms.

“Simply put, defendants’ claim that ‘Liberty Brings Back its Students and Coronavirus, Too’ was made up,” the suit claims. The suit also adds that the New York Times went out of their way to “engineer a specific fictional tale that portrayed Liberty and its President as a caricature the New York Times’ liberal audience would love: backward, irresponsible, anti-science, responsible for getting people sick in a pandemic, and closely tied to and mirroring President Trump.”

The president of Liberty University, Jerry Falwell Jr., has been vocal in his opposition to the claims made in the media. He recently told Sean Hannity that the New York Times is a “bigoted bunch of liars” that has become a “BuzzFeed type click bait publication.”

Speaking to the Washington Examiner, Falwell also said that the NYT “picked on the wrong conservative.”

“It’s just not right for the mainstream media to lie about and target conservative Christian organizations just because of their faith an because of their political beliefs, and we’re going to make an example out of them.”

Let’s see how this one turns out…by the sounds of it, Liberty University isn’t backing down!
