Cuomo: New York Will Take 1,000 Ventilators From China

(RightWingAmericans.Com)- Democratic Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, announced during his daily press conference on Saturday that the state’s hospitals will receive 1,000 ventilators from China.

“This is a big deal, and it’s going to make a significant difference for us,” Cuomo said.

The deal comes at a time when America is reconsidering its dependence on China for such a huge quantity of manufactured goods, but also at a time when the country desperately needs as many ventilators as possible.

Cuomo explained that the founders of Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce firm that distributes low-cost bulk orders of product all over the world, facilitated the donation of the ventilators to the state. Jack Ma and Joseph Tsai coordinated the deal with the Chinese government, and the ventilators arrived the same day at JFK airport.

“We finally got some good news today,” Governor Cuomo wrote on Twitter. “The Chinese government helped facilitate a donation of 1,000 ventilators that will arrive in JFK today.”

The addition of 1,000 ventilators will be welcomed by medical staff all over the state who fear they may simply not have enough of them available when the state reached peak infections. Cuomo said during the press conference on Saturday that there are 15,905 people hospitalized in New York with COVID-19 right now, and of those, 4,100 are in intensive care and require breathing assistance.

Cuomo also insisted that the United States needs to work on mending supply chain problems that have made hospitals dependent on equipment from China.

“China is remarkably the repository for all of these orders – ventilators, PPE – it all goes back to China,” he said. “Which long term we have to figure out why we ended up in this situation where we don’t have the manufacturing capacity in this country.”

Ironically, Cuomo was parroting a Trump talking point from the 2016 election campaign, and an issue he has continued working on since. As president, Donald Trump has encouraged Democrats to get on board with his “Buy American” schemes and his attempts at bringing back manufacturing to the United States.

He had been met with much derision and opposition every time, however.

While the United States continues to depend on China to assist with the deployment of important personal protective equipment in American hospitals, much of the equipment coming out of China isn’t even good enough to use. A vast majority of the COVID-19 test kits sold to Spain and the Czech Republic by China didn’t work, and around half of the 1.3 million medical masks donated by China were defective.
